The Ninilchik Village Russian Orthodox church
located about a mile from the park is the most photographed spot on the Kenai
Peninsula. The Russian heritage of the area is symbolized by this remarkable
structure built in the late 1800s. Perched on a dramatic bluff, it overlooks
Cook Inlet and the remains of the old Russian settlement in the small valley
directly beneath it. It is an active house of worship of the local Russian
descendants so we ask you please respect it and its cemetary as you visit and
view its historic beauty.
The village name is derived from this Russian
heritage, its meaning being peaceful settlement by the river. Some
of the village homes are remains of the original buildings, and there is a
local arts and crafts shop located there in the old village.
