Wildlife & Photography
Alaska sights can be truly breathtaking. If you
are looking for that great wildlife or scenery “photos op” you should
not have to look very far. Here are some suggestions:
Eagles:
Go to the beach at the Deep Creek boat launch
and walk south about ¼ mile. This is the area where the fish carcasses
are dumped back into the ocean and birds of all kinds love this feasting
opportunity- especially bald eagles. If you are careful, you can walk right up
to any of a hundred eagles gorging in this area. Also important are the many
nests in the cliffs overhead, and the majestic soaring of dozens of adults on
the ocean breezes. Look for the brown heads of the youngest ones as they watch
and learn from their elders.
The eagles arrive in April and most leave in
late June. Some will remain into the fall but not all.
Moose:
It’s not so much as where you go for
moose as when you go. You must get up at dawn or stay up til dusk to see moose
in numbers. Remember that sunrise is 0330 and sunset is midnight in summer!
Moose frequent our park. ALWAYS keep your distance even though it seems like
they are just like domestic cattle. Mother cows are very protective of newborn
calves so be especially careful of this pair. Try just driving in the local
area back roads and you will no doubt see several. Look in clearings in marshy
areas or swamps.
Bears:
Brown and black bears are in our area but are generally skittish and do not like the loud noises of summer and traffic. The best opportunities are walking up the local rivers when the salmon are running. BE BEAR SMART! Study and learn bear viewing techniques before attempting this activity. These animals are not to be taken lightly. The safest viewing of the maximum number of bears is by our float plane trips. See our charters sections and select fly-in charters for details of this trip. That is where we got the bear photo at the top of the RV park section pages.
Scenery:
The Sterling Highway north
and south from our park provides amply opportunities for water/ mountain/
volcano photographs. Sunrise and sunset are best. Also great are the beach
areas at Ninilchik village and Deep Creek boat launch. Be sure to get a photo
of the boat launch operation at Deep Creek- your friends will not believe
it!
The local wild flowers are fantastic. Look for
arctic lupine, fireweed, forget-me-not, and Sitka rose (available next to our
office). They make beautiful close-ups. |
