Frequently asked Questions
***Be sure to check the FAQ
page in our charter section for fishing-related FAQs.
How far is it to drive to Alaska? How much
time does it take? Seattle to Anchorage is 2500 miles. We recommend you
allow about two weeks on average for that portion of the trip. In general, we recommend you allow the entire summer for the overall trip if you can.
What are the roads like? Will I damage my RV on the trip? The main Alaska highway is a two-lane paved road that is no better
or no worse than any other two-lane road in the US.Some sections are straight and smooth and some are curvy and hilly. You are no more
and no less likely to damage your unit on this road than on any two lane road that is 2500 miles long. However, there are some side roads
that are quite challenging and should only be driven with suitable vehicles. You need to get educated on specific roads and conditions before
you start the trip.
What is the best source for information on
roads? Two good sources for travel in Alaska are “The
Milepost” and “Bell’s Alaska Travelguide”.
When is the best time to drive there?
Depending on the criteria you use to ask that question, consider the following
guidelines:
- May is our driest month, and not very
crowded. Cool dry temps.
- June is month of longest daylight, very
warm, starting to get more people.
- July is warmest month and most fishing
activity, also most people.
- August has more mositure but most
Alaskan families are back home getting ready for school so it is not
crowded.
- September starts fall, cool but
beautiful. Lots of businesses close Labor Day.
- By October 1st expect snow.
When is the best time to avoid the insects?
The issue of insects (mosquitoes, flies, etc) is not one of time but one of geography.
The maritime areas like ours that are close to the ocean have almost no insects, while the muskeg (swamp) areas in the interior of Alaska have insects all summer.
What are Alaskan fuel prices? What about
Canada prices? Fuel prices in cities and towns of Alaska are on par
with most lower 48 locations. In the bush communtiies (remote areas) fuel
prices will be higher than most lower 48 states, similar to California prices.
Canada fuel prices are higher. Remember Canada sells in liters.
I don't have time to drive all the way up in my RV. Can I fly up and rent one in Alaska?
Renting an RV in Alaska is a very popular choice for those that like the RV lifestyle of travel but don't have time to drive the whole route.
There are many RV rental companies in Anchorage. We suggest an internet search to examine the many opportunities.
